What's Under That Rock?
WATER QUALITY TESTING

MACROINVERTEBRATES WORKSHOP AND COLLECTION SESSIONS

Funded by the Connecticut Community Foundation
in collaboration with Rivers Alliance of Connecticut

WORKSHOP AND COLLECTION SESSIONS

MAY 22 . . .
Benthic Macro Invertebrate Monitoring (collecting samples of aquatic insects),
Washington Town Hall, Washington, Conn.

Time to be announced

June 16 . . .
Benthic Macro Invertebrate Monitoring (collecting samples of aquatic insects), Codding and Washington Mountain Brooks, Lee Mass.
Join us for a morning of turning over river rocks and collecting river bugs on these tributaries to the Housatonic River. The types of bug found will help determine the water quality of these tributaries. HVA will supply the necessary gear and identification info for this collection. Call 413-394-9796 to register.

WORKSHOP:  Volunteers are trained to collect, sort and identify aqautic insects (macroinvertebrates) and learn how they act as indicator species of our river's health. The training workshop is an indoor session. COLLECTION:  Volunteers go to a location on the river to collect aquatic insects. Bring a bag lunch and footwear that is waterproof and slip proof. HVA waders are limited and must be reserved in advance.

Macroinvertebrates (primarily insect larvae living under rocks in streams), can reveal the water quality of streams that flow into the Housatonic River. The data is submitted to experts at the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) who ensure that it is correct and it is included in an annual water quality report to Congress.

Volunteers get a close-up look at the creatures that live in our streams and learn why they are an important part of a stream's ecology. The process, designed by the DEP, is simple, fun and quick (officially it's called a "rapid bioassessment").
