Final Project Assignment

Directions:  The following is a description of the final group project that you will help to create.  Each member of the group is responsible to complete the writing piece and then one other aspect of the project.  The group projects are due in two weeks.  Make sure you read each aspect of the project and understand what you, and your group as a whole, are responsible to accomplish.

Your mission if you choose to accept it (and you must accept it):

Your group is to imagine that the year is 1733 and you are part of a group of explorers that has been sent by a company in Boston to find suitable land for development near a river.  You are to explain to investors and potential settlers in Boston that the Southern Berkshire area around the Housatonic River is the ideal place for them to settle.  You must be able to prove to the company that has hired you and the skeptical city folk of Boston that the area around the Housatonic is not only useful, but also essential for them to relocate to.  All the work you complete during this project must be done with this task in mind.

Components of Group Work:

1.      Group Project

2.      Group Presentation to class

3.      Group Presentation to another audience

Group Project Description:

There are 3 sections to the group projects that you will complete.  Each section must be completed for you to get full credit on this project.  Overall, your project will consist of six components.

Section 1:  Written component

Explanation:  Each member of your group must complete their own written component.  You are to write a five paragraph, at least one page, persuasive essay that convinces people in Boston to want to relocate to the Southern Berkshires on the Housatonic River.  Your essay must provide at least three reasons about the river and the surroundings that would make people want to move to the area.  Your essay must also provide numerous examples to prove your reasons.  Your essay will be graded on your ability to persuade Bostonians to want to relocate to our area so that they can utilize the Housatonic River.  Your group will hand in four different persuasive essays.

Section 2:  Visual components

Explanation:  Your group must complete four different visual components.  This means that each group member must complete one different visual for the group.  The four different visuals are:

     Map of the Housatonic River

One member of your group must trace or draw one aspect of the river.  This part of the river must be accompanied by a brief written description that tells why this aspect of the river was chosen and how this map would convince others in Boston to move to this area.  This must be done 24” by 18” paper, at the minimum.

Brochure of the river and surrounding area

One member of your group must create a tri-fold brochure that explains some of the highlights of moving to this area.  This brochure would be a document that you would hand out to all the perspective settlers in Boston.  Also the brochure should utilize the pictures that your group takes on the field trips and should include some writing to explain the pictures and describe the highlights of the river and surrounding area.  Your brochure should be folded three times to create a tri-fold effect.

     Advertisement Poster

One member of your group must create a 24” by 18” advertisement that encourages Bostonians to move to this area.  Your advertisement must have a large drawing on it that is eye-catching and some form of writing that entices people to want to move to this area.

Poster of math shapes in nature

One member of your group must draw a large rendition of the math shape in nature that he/she drew at the Cobble.  This picture must be on large paper (at least 24” by 18”) and must be colored.  You must also include a small writing piece that explains what your nature shape has to do with math.

Section 3: Oral presentation components

Explanation:  Your group will have to complete two different oral presentations.  One of these presentations will be given to your class and the other will be given to another group to be determined later.  Much more will be said about these presentations in the near future.  Keep in mind that your visual aspects of your group project will be key in your presentations.

Brochures use a variety of themes to entice settlers to come to the Berkshires.
